The trip in a nutshell

Why this one

The Highlights itinerary skips the western leg and gets straight to the headline acts: Melbourne, Sydney, Uluru, Alice Springs, Kakadu, Katherine, the Great Barrier Reef and Brisbane. Then it hops the Tasman for a full New Zealand circuit — Bay of Islands, Rotorua, Wellington, the TranzAlpine, Franz Josef, Queenstown, Milford Sound and Dunedin — before finishing where every long journey should: on a white-sand lagoon in the Cook Islands.

It's eight days shorter than the full Wonders tour and over £2,000 cheaper, but you still come home having seen the things you actually came for.

“Everything is arranged. Every flight, every transfer, every hotel, every big-ticket experience. All you have to do is turn up at the airport.”

The moments you'll remember

Nine reasons this itinerary sells out

Uluru at sunset and sunrise

The centrepiece of any Australian journey — twice, in two completely different lights.

Great Barrier Reef catamaran cruise

Coral gardens, tropical fish and the option to snorkel straight off the boat.

Sydney's icons

Bondi Beach, Darling Harbour and that first view of the Opera House against the Bridge.

Kakadu, Nourlangie & Yellow Water

Rock art galleries and a wetland cruise thick with birdlife and crocodiles.

Waitangi Treaty House

Where modern New Zealand began, on the shore of the sub-tropical Bay of Islands.

Te Puia & Tamaki hāngi feast

Geothermal theatre by day, Māori welcome and earth-cooked feast by night.

The TranzAlpine railway

Over Arthur's Pass to the West Coast — routinely rated a top-five rail journey worldwide.

Milford Sound with lunch aboard

Cruise the fjord under Mitre Peak past thundering waterfalls.

Four nights in Rarotonga

Manuia Beach Resort on the sand, and a lagoon that looks Photoshopped.

Day by day

The full 45-day itinerary

Tap any stage to open it. Meals included at each stage are marked in green.

Days 1–2Fly out from the UK to Melbourne

Settle in for the long haul with a good film and a glass of something. You'll cross the world overnight and touch down in Melbourne, where a transfer to your hotel and a welcome drink with your Travelsphere Holiday Director eases you into Australian time.

Days 3–4Melbourne — laneways, coffee and coastline

Australia's culture capital rewards wandering: bluestone laneways strung with street art, hole-in-the-wall espresso bars, the Royal Botanic Gardens and the hallowed turf of the MCG. With free time built in, many guests head for Phillip Island to watch the little penguins waddle ashore at dusk.

2 breakfasts
Days 5–7Sydney — the harbour, the sails and the surf

Three nights in the city that needs no introduction. A guided tour takes in Bondi Beach, Hyde Park, Mrs Macquarie's Chair and Darling Harbour, with that first head-on view of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge that no photograph ever quite prepares you for. Free days invite an Opera House backstage tour, the BridgeClimb, or a day in the Blue Mountains to see the Three Sisters.

3 breakfasts
Days 8–9Uluru — sunset sparkling wine, sunrise silence

The emotional heart of the tour. You'll arrive in the Red Centre in time to watch Uluru at sunset, glass of sparkling wine in hand, as the rock burns through ochre, rust and deep violet. Next morning you return for sunrise — quieter, cooler, and somehow more moving — before exploring the 36 weathered domes of Kata Tjuta.

Breakfast
Day 10Alice Springs — the real outback

Deep in the Northern Territory you'll visit the Royal Flying Doctor Service base and the School of the Air, which teaches children scattered across an area the size of western Europe. In the evening, an authentic bush barbecue under a sky so thick with stars that the Milky Way casts a shadow.

Breakfast
Day 11Darwin — tropical frontier city

Australia's most relaxed capital: mango trees, sunset markets at Mindil Beach and a wartime history worth an afternoon. It's the gateway to everything wild in the Top End.

Breakfast
Days 12–13Kakadu National Park — rock art and wetlands

A UNESCO World Heritage site twice over, for its landscape and its living culture. You'll stand before Aboriginal rock art at Nourlangie painted and repainted over tens of thousands of years, then cruise the Yellow Water Lagoon at the golden hour among jabiru, sea eagles and very large saltwater crocodiles.

2 breakfasts
Day 14Katherine Gorge — sandstone country by boat

Nitmiluk's thirteen gorges were cut through ancient sandstone by the Katherine River. A cruise through the sheer red walls, with freshwater crocodiles sunning themselves on the ledges, is one of the Territory's quiet masterpieces.

Breakfast
Days 15–18Cairns & the Great Barrier Reef

The big one. A catamaran cruise out to the Great Barrier Reef gives you time to snorkel over coral gardens, ride a glass-bottomed boat or simply float above the largest living structure on Earth. Free days in Cairns open up the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail over the canopy, or a crocodile-spotting cruise in the Daintree Rainforest.

4 breakfasts, lunch
Days 19–20Brisbane — river city finale

Queensland's capital wraps around a lazy bend of the Brisbane River: South Bank's man-made beach, the Story Bridge, and subtropical warmth year-round. An optional day on North Stradbroke Island is a lovely last taste of Australian coast.

2 breakfasts
Days 21–22Auckland — the City of Sails

Cross the Tasman to New Zealand's biggest city, built across an isthmus between two harbours and studded with 53 extinct volcanoes. Take the lift up the Sky Tower, wander the Viaduct, or catch a ferry to the vineyards of Waiheke Island.

2 breakfasts
Days 23–25Bay of Islands & Waitangi

North to Paihia and the sub-tropical Bay of Islands — 144 of them, scattered across water the colour of bottle glass. You'll visit the Treaty House at Waitangi, where modern New Zealand was founded in 1840. Optional cruises run out to the Hole in the Rock, and a full-day trip heads up Ninety Mile Beach to Cape Reinga, where two oceans collide.

3 breakfasts
Days 26–27Rotorua — geothermal drama and Māori culture

The ground here steams, bubbles and occasionally erupts. At Te Puia you'll see the Pōhutu Geyser fire up to 30 metres skyward and watch carvers and weavers at work. In the evening, a traditional Tamaki hāngi feast — food cooked in the earth, and a welcome, a haka and a performance that guests consistently name their favourite night of the trip.

2 breakfasts, dinner
Days 28–29Wellington — the coolest little capital

New Zealand's windswept capital packs a lot into a small harbour: the cable car up to the Botanic Garden, the superb Te Papa museum, a serious coffee culture and a film industry hiding in the suburbs.

2 breakfasts
Day 30Across Cook Strait to the South Island

The ferry through the Marlborough Sounds is one of the world's most scenic crossings — three hours of drowned river valleys and forested headlands before the South Island opens up ahead of you.

Breakfast
Day 31The TranzAlpine — over the Southern Alps by rail

Board the TranzAlpine, routinely voted one of the great railway journeys on Earth. In four and a half hours you climb from the Canterbury Plains through the gorges of the Waimakariri, over Arthur's Pass and down through beech rainforest to the wild West Coast.

Breakfast
Day 32Franz Josef Glacier — ice at the edge of the rainforest

A glacier that flows almost to sea level through temperate rainforest, which is as strange and wonderful as it sounds. Helicopter flights (optional) land you on the ice itself for a snow landing you will not forget.

Breakfast
Day 33Queenstown — adventure capital of the world

Wrapped around Lake Wakatipu beneath the sawtooth Remarkables, Queenstown is pure alpine theatre. Ride the Skyline gondola for the view, take a jet boat through the Shotover canyons, or simply sit lakeside with a Central Otago pinot and watch the light change.

2 breakfasts
Day 34Milford Sound — the eighth wonder of the world

Rudyard Kipling's phrase, not ours. You'll cruise the fjord beneath Mitre Peak, past waterfalls that plunge more than 150 metres straight into black water, with fur seals on the rocks and dolphins in the wake — lunch included on board.

Breakfast, lunch
Day 35Te Anau Glow Worm Caves

By boat and by foot into a living cave system, ending in a silent grotto where thousands of glow worms hang like a private galaxy overhead.

Breakfast
Days 36–37Dunedin, Moeraki & the Southern Scenic route

Scotland with better beaches: Dunedin's Victorian railway station is the most photographed building in the country. Along the coast the Moeraki Boulders lie half-buried in the sand like giant marbles, and the Otago Peninsula shelters the world's only mainland royal albatross colony.

2 breakfasts
Day 38Aoraki / Mount Cook & the Mackenzie Country

Through Omarama and the astonishing turquoise lakes of the Mackenzie Basin, under the gaze of Aoraki / Mount Cook — New Zealand's highest peak and, thanks to a Dark Sky Reserve, one of the best places on Earth to look up at night.

Breakfast
Days 39–43Rarotonga, Cook Islands — four nights of pure blue

The reward at the end of the road. You'll fly to Rarotonga and check into the Manuia Beach Resort, a small, low-slung boutique property right on the sand. Four nights of turquoise lagoon, hibiscus, snorkelling straight off the beach and absolutely nothing you have to do. A local representative is on hand throughout.

5 breakfasts
Days 44–45Rarotonga to Auckland and home

One last swim, then the flight back via Auckland — you cross the International Date Line on the way, so you arrive before you left. Time to start planning the next one.

Before you fly

Don't leave these until the last week

Airport parking, a night at the terminal, lounge access and travel insurance are all cheaper booked early — and on a 45-day trip, the parking alone is a serious line item.

Airport parking

On a four-week trip, airport parking is one of the biggest add-on costs of the whole holiday — and one of the few that gets cheaper the earlier you book.

Check prices & book

Airport hotels

Long-haul to Australia usually means an early or awkward departure. A night at the terminal beforehand turns a 3am start into a lie-in.

Check prices & book

Airport lounges

Before a 20-hour flight, three hours of quiet, free food and a proper seat is worth considerably more than it costs.

Travel insurance

Non-negotiable on a trip this long and this far away. Check the medical cover limits and that your full trip length and any activities are included.

Before you book

Frequently asked questions

When can I travel, and how far ahead should I book?

Departures run from October 2026 through to September 2028. Long-haul escorted tours of this length sell out early — the best-value departure dates and preferred room types typically go 9–12 months ahead, so it pays to secure your place sooner rather than later.

Which UK airport can I fly from?

Return flights are included from your chosen UK airport. Regional departures are available on most dates, sometimes for a small supplement — you'll see the options for your date when you check availability.

Is this a group tour? How big is the group?

Yes — this is a fully escorted small-group tour with a Travelsphere Holiday Director travelling with you throughout. They handle the logistics, the check-ins and the local know-how, so your job is simply to enjoy it. Groups are typically modest in size and overwhelmingly British.

Do I need a visa?

British passport holders need an Australian ETA (Electronic Travel Authority) and an NZeTA for New Zealand where applicable — both are straightforward online applications. Your passport should have at least six months' validity remaining. Always check the latest FCDO and official government guidance before you travel.

How much walking is involved?

A moderate amount. You should be comfortable on your feet for sightseeing, uneven ground at Uluru and Kakadu, and getting on and off coaches and boats. There is plenty of free time built in to rest, and most active elements are optional.

Are single travellers welcome?

Very. Escorted touring is one of the friendliest ways to travel solo, and single rooms are available on request — check current availability and any supplement when you view the departure dates.

Why add the Cook Islands?

Because after four or five weeks of big-hitting sightseeing, four nights doing absolutely nothing on a beach in Rarotonga is the perfect full stop. It's included in the price, it's on the natural flight path home via Auckland, and it turns an epic itinerary into a genuinely restorative one.

Is the New Zealand section worth the extra days?

If you are already flying 10,000 miles, adding New Zealand is the single best-value decision you can make. You get both islands — Bay of Islands, Rotorua's geothermal theatre, the TranzAlpine, Milford Sound and Queenstown — in one continuous, fully-organised itinerary. Most people only make this trip once.

Ready to see the dates?

Live availability, departure dates from your local airport and current offers are on the operator's booking page. Deposits are low, the balance isn't due until much later, and every booking is ABTA and ATOL protected.
