The unglamorous half of the holiday
Before you fly
You've just spent somewhere between £2,700 and £18,000 on the trip of a lifetime. These are the four things that decide whether the first day of it is a pleasure or a slog — and all four are cheaper the earlier you deal with them.
Airport parking
On a four-week trip, airport parking is one of the biggest add-on costs of the whole holiday — and one of the few that gets cheaper the earlier you book.
Airport hotels
Long-haul to Australia usually means an early or awkward departure. A night at the terminal beforehand turns a 3am start into a lie-in.
Airport lounges
Before a 20-hour flight, three hours of quiet, free food and a proper seat is worth considerably more than it costs.
Travel insurance
Non-negotiable on a trip this long and this far away. Check the medical cover limits and that your full trip length and any activities are included.
eSIM data — £2.50 off
Skip the roaming charges. An Airalo eSIM gives you data the moment you land, and our referral link takes £2.50 off your first one.
Parking, hotels, lounges and insurance are booked through Holiday Extras; eSIMs through Airalo, using our referral link (you get £2.50 off, we get credit too). Both are commercial links — see our disclosure.
The one that actually matters
A word on insurance for long trips
Most travel insurance sold in the UK is written for a fortnight in Spain. The tours on this site run from 9 to 53 days, and a good number of annual multi-trip policies quietly cap individual trips at 31 days — which would leave you uninsured for the back half of a grand tour.
Check the single-trip duration limit, the medical cover limit, and whether the activities you're planning are named. Then buy it when you pay your deposit, not when you pack, so that cancellation cover is running from the start.
Questions
Getting the airport bit right
How much is airport parking for a month?
It is the single most underestimated cost of a long Australian trip. On-airport short stay for four weeks can run into four figures; off-airport park-and-ride or meet-and-greet is dramatically cheaper, and prices rise steadily as the date approaches. Book it when you book the holiday, not the week before.
Is an airport hotel worth it?
For a long-haul departure, usually yes. Flights to Australia often leave early in the morning or require a check-in that makes a 4am drive unavoidable. A room at the terminal the night before — often with parking bundled in for less than parking alone — turns the first day of the holiday from an ordeal into a lie-in.
Are airport lounges worth booking for a flight to Australia?
The economics are better than they look. You are typically facing a three-hour check-in window followed by a 20-hour journey; a lounge gives you food, drinks, wifi and a seat that isn't in a departure hall. Pre-booked entry is far cheaper than paying on the door, and lounges do sell out at peak times.
What should I look for in travel insurance for Australia?
Three things above all: a medical cover limit in the millions (Australian healthcare is excellent and expensive), cover for the full length of your trip — many annual policies cap single trips at 31 days, which rules them out for the longer tours on this site — and explicit cover for anything adventurous you plan to do, from snorkelling to helicopter flights. Declare pre-existing conditions honestly; an undeclared condition is the most common reason claims fail.
When should I book all this?
Parking and hotels: as early as possible, since both are priced dynamically and only go up. Insurance: the day you pay your deposit, because cancellation cover starts from the moment the policy begins — buying it later leaves the deposit unprotected.
